Spreading accross approximately 413 square miles of rolling hills and beautiful forestry land of Clarke County, Mississippi, is the Quitman School District. Taking its name from the City of Quitman, the county seat of Clarke County, the Quitman School District is founded on a firm community commitment to quality public education. This is reflected in the mission of the Quitman School District which is to attain learning excellence through a blending of the strong traditions and experiences of the past with the opportunities and progress of the future.
Students in kindergarten through grade two attend Quitman Lower Elementary, a modern educational facility first occupied during the 1987-1988 school year. The fullday kindergarten program features a learning center style approach that nurtures students during this most important developmental year. A strong, coordinated curriculum in grades one and two provides students with a sound beginning in the basics of reading, mathematics, and writing. Learning opportunities for students are enhanced through two computer labs utilizing the "Write to Read" programs. Beginning with grade three, students attend Quitman Upper Elementary which is structured to meet the specialized learning needs of students in grades three, four, and five. Through a cluster type facility design, the Upper Elementary School is able to create an atmosphere of a small school within a school for students served at each grade level. Building on the solid foundation initiated in grades kindergarten, one and two, Quitman Upper Elementary extends learning development in reading, mathematics, and English, while greatly expanding student learning opportunities in the science and social studies areas. Quitman Junior High serves students in grades six, seven, and eight by continuing the focus on academic development while introducing students to the opportunities for participation in extracurricular activities. The special social and developmental needs of students in grades six, seven, and eight are recognized and become an essential component of the academic program. A center computer lab, band, and choral music offers students varied learning opportunities and guided social development.
An experienced, dedicated staff of support personnel and teachers serves the 2,700 students of the Quitman School District. Through small group instructional strategies and attention to each individual learner's needs, this group of highly trained, professional teachers provide the best in learning opportunities while challenging each student to excellence. Attention to detail and sensitivity are characteristics of the approximately 160 member certified teaching staff. The Quitman School District is proud to be the place where the best learning traditions, experiences, and practices of the past merge with the technology and progress of the future. Learning enhancement and the well being of students in a supportive environment is the total focus of the Quitman School District. |
