The annual "Clarke County Forestry & Wildlife Festival", sponsored by the Clarke County Chamber of Commerce and held on the first Saturday in October, offers a wide variety of family fun and entertainment. Activities and exhibits emphasize the county's major resource - forestry. Arts and crafts, chain saw sculpturing, farm machinery and auto exhibits, a kiddy-land, live entertainment, forestry exhibits and competitions, good food and a lot more make for a day of real family entertainment. On Saturday of every Memorial Day weekend, 4,000-5,000 people attend the annual "Day In the Park" at Clarkco State Park. This has become a tradition to celebrate the beginning of summer with arts, crafts, exhibits, entertainment, and lots of good food. The arts are well represented in Quitman Schools. Students in grades six through twelve are given the opportunity to join a first class band program. The Quitman Junior High and High School bands offer their members varied musical experiences ranging from half-time marching shows at football games to graded contests, local concerts, and optional clinics and honor bands such as Lion's All-State Band. The quality on the many facets of this organization is well known throughout the state. Not only does the Quitman Band perform on the Superior level at state contests, but also at regional festivals such as the Daytona Invitational Festival. A typical performance highlights instrumental soloists as well as the Flag Corps. Whereas most communities have band programs in their schools, not as many have choirs. The Quitman High School Concert Choir and Junior High Choir are known year after year as one of the very best choir programs in the state. Maintaining this tradition keeps students involved participating in Mississippi All State Honor Choir and Show Choir, Delta State Honor Choir, State Choral Camp, and solo and ensemble contests. Most recently the high school choir presented a solo concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City through audition. Local concerts showcase talents of individuals who have performed at the superior level in both junior high and high school choirs. "Take A Bow" Productions is a local theater company sponsored and directed by Mrs. April Lightsey and Ms. Chan Reddy. Elementary, junior high, and high schools aged students participate in these dramatic and musical productions. They have been received enthusiastically by the community. |
